A recipe for health: Creating a healthy kitchen

It’s fun, actually. Cooking with your kids. My kids love cooking, especially my son, Logan. He’s been in my kitchen since he was about four. Standing on stools, covered in an apron and oven mitts “to here”. My daughter, Zoe, well she is more of a restaurant manager. She is just like Mommy.

A little colour injection

I. Want. COLOUR!

Is there a little kid inside of you screaming for colour? It’s like this deep longing inside your soul that jumps up an down with glee every time you see bright pretty toss cushions and brightly painted walls. You are reminded of summer, and amazing vacations and sunshine and life. Oh but you can’t! What will people say? Would if you got sick of it in a year?

Don’t stress. Dance.

Image result for stress awareness

April is national stress awareness month. Sounds gross. Feels worse.  Stress is a real thing, unfortunately.

My assistant found this statistic:

At least 1/3 of Canadians feel that they are constantly under stress because they are trying to accomplish more than what they can effectively handle and not taking the time to decompress often enough.

Santa’s Bedroom Design and a Handy Husband!

Well, last year Santa gave us the task of working on his living room design. I think we did a great job. You can see the feed on our instagram from December 2015…

This year, we tackled his bedroom which was quite the challenge.  It was full of random Christmas items from bygone years (thing #TBT). A bit of overkill if you please.

How to Shag!

Mad Men set – Interior Design Magazine

In the 60s, shag rugs began to surface.  The TV show Mad Men has one designed space that blows my mind. The bohemian vibe, and shag rug over high pile rug make me feel a little nostalgic for the 70s, when this was all the rage, I am pretty sure one can link the rise of asthma with the popularity of these rugs.

Cheers to the 2015 Colour of the Year!

I’m always game when the world of design moves in the direction of good wine.  What?  Oh, sorry, did I write that out loud?  Marsala, a wine produced in the region surrounding the Italian city of Marsala, AND, the Pantone colour of the year (#18-438).  An earthy brownish-red that is described by Pantone Color Institute Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman as “nurturing and fulfilling…Marsala is a natural fit for your kitchen or dining room, making it ideal for tabletop, small appliances and linens throughout the home.”

The Chair-y on Top!

Any designer will tell you, they have a secret obsession with the accent chair.   Accent chairs offer us easy and fun ways to fill little empty spaces, create punch in an otherwise boring room, use our favourite fabrics, indulge in a sculptural piece, or repurpose the cutest, sweetest, possibly not even usable, old chair that we can live without.  But the insistence that every chair in your house must serve as seating holds us back.  As does the misconception that your chairs must “match” your sofa, or your entire dining set.  Think of it this way.  An accent chair can be purposeful or just visual, funky or vintage, cheap and cheerful or expensive and luxurious.  Here are some of my top picks for this season!
