I. Want. COLOUR! Is there a little kid inside of you screaming for colour? It’s like this deep longing inside your soul that jumps up an down with glee every time you see bright pretty toss cushions and brightly painted walls. You are reminded of summer, and amazing vacations and sunshine and life. Oh but you can’t! What will people say? Would if you got sick of it in a year? I love this blue wall. I look at it and think “can’t someone out there want a blue wall?” And then I remind myself that if I renovate the house again, or even suggest a paint colour change; my dear, wonderful husband who just finished this house, might be a little miffed. Bang! Bang! Ok, so maybe you aren’t as sick of gray and white as I am. You haven’t done countless homes in that colour palette over the last ten years. But, the trends are leaning warmer now, and begging for more colour. I guess we could sneak some in? Just a little? We can warm up your grays with creamy pinks, or pops of blue? Tans and olive greens? It’s a slippery slope. You […]

When Maureen and Craig first called us, I was very excited. They are family with some really great people I know. I went down to the city to meet them, and just as I expected, they were pretty terrific. Stepping back into the 1800s They live in a super old house. It was built in 1890. They have archival images on their walls, the original door to the house. On the first evening we met, I got to the door and searched for a bell. No doorbell. Well, none that I could see anyway. When Maureen opened the door and I mentioned that we could add that into the project, she laughed. “Here it is!” With great smiles they both explained that the doorbell is 129 years old, the door is original to the house, and they just refused to give it up. You can see in the photo, it’s the circular knob right above the mail slot. They then showed me archival photos they have on their walls, not only of the house, but of a great many important things to them that date back to their roots and their family heritage. I got to know […]
You ever flip through a magazine and see a sofa with ten toss cushions on it and think “Wow! How did they do that?” Here’s a couple of tips for you: In spaces where you have one accent colour, and you want that colour to really play a part in your design, use multiple patterns, textures and shades of that colour in your cushions. In spaces where you have several colours in your palette, think it as giving each colour an excuse to be in the room. Repeat your colours in your toss cushions, and bring your space together. Never fear multiple patterns! Just keep them in the same colour family and strength, and try to have patterns that work well together in scale. For example, small pretty traditional flowers, don’t look good with modern geometrics. So keep the vibe the same, and you can’t go wrong! Happy #trendtuesday! Revi

All the beauty of life is made up of light and shadow -Leo Tolstoy “Shadow”. It sounds so dark, exotic, sexy. It’s Benjamin Moore’s colour of the year. And it’s a good one. Can I be tacky for a second? It’s like an aged grape. Hints of gray, notes of neutral. A smoky, warm aroma. Goes well paired with a “dark burgundy” dressed with a pale “porcelain”. The muted shade honestly goes well with almost anything. I think a powder room completely enveloped in this shade would be dramatic and rich. While I am pretty much done with painting a feature wall (wallpaper and plaster finishes are much more inviting), I could imagine a staircase cove, or library. This photo by Benjamin Moore displays it perfectly. A slightly brighter tone of this colour, would be amazing as a velvet sofa. How luscious would you feel lounging on this? Wallpaper, as I often suggest! One here, uses golds to offset the darker grape hues. It’s modern AND classic in design, and injects the colour without over-committing. The second wallpaper, a complimentary shade. Imagine using this one a wall, and shadow on the ceiling. Talk about an intense and dynamic paring! […]

I’m always game when the world of design moves in the direction of good wine. What? Oh, sorry, did I write that out loud? Marsala, a wine produced in the region surrounding the Italian city of Marsala, AND, the Pantone colour of the year (#18-438). An earthy brownish-red that is described by Pantone Color Institute Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman as “nurturing and fulfilling…Marsala is a natural fit for your kitchen or dining room, making it ideal for tabletop, small appliances and linens throughout the home.” That’s it? NO WAY! It’s an amazing colour. Filled with the true essence of warmth and nature, sophistication and timelessness, this colour is definitely making my 2015 a very exciting year. Modern Marsala Think clean lines, awesome colour, lots of light. Using Marsala in a modern space, against white walls, or light gray furniture creates a warmer effect to a colder modern design. Funky white Butterfly chairs, as in the image below, against the contrasting wall shows off the chairs lines, and keeps things interesting without going overboard. The key in more modern design is to keep the “accent” colour blocked, such as an accent wall, some toss cushions, or a pop from a […]

Paint above: Benjamin Moore Welcome to the new age of design. As the new generation starts to move into their new homes, condos, apartments and swanky lofts, they long for something different than what they grew up with. They want to spread their fashion wings, and let their individuality shine. We spent most of the 80s and 90s saturating homes in greens and burgundies. One of my first jobs, as a designer, was to help a client who spent a fortune on a turquoise leather sofa in the late 80s. Yes, you just read that. The millennium arrived, and as my amazing faux finisher/decorative painter Suzanne Pratt of Venetian Studios rants, “boring, blah, beige, took over!” So here we are. Most of us, are sickened at the thought of hunter green and deep wine, and bored with white and beige. So, in efforts to help us out, the world of design is giving us BLUE! And, just in time for summer! Blue, as a “staple” colour, is a leap for most people. A blue sofa? A blue dresser? A blue rug? Really? It’s not just an accent colour? NO! If you are one of those people who has been […]

It’s back! It’s been back for quite a while, and although most of us associate wallpaper with the 1970s velvet flocked granny papers, modern times have propelled wallpapers into the future. No matter your design ethic, wallpaper can add anything from some simple texture, a splash of colour or an artistic element. Use it to complete your design, add sophistication or even frame it as an inexpensive, yet unique, piece of art. Super thank you to Joanne Fabrics (www.joannefabrics.com) for these great wallpapers, and for providing Monaco Interiors will all the books for our clients!! Let’s look at different styles and how wallpaper can be used to enhance a space. Cottage/Vintage Chic Pretty wallpaper, in either a neutral as shown, or a lovely shade of your favorite vintage inspired colour, can really create the look you are after by acting as your jumping off point. Here we can see that the paper used initiates the colour palette, and instantly gives the homeowner that cottage chic, almost French inspired look. Add some feminine furnishings, and there you go. Design done. Un fait acompli! (means job well done) Hollywood Glam Going black and white is a classic, Hollywood inspired design concept. […]

What’s your personality? Laid-back? Super-charged? Fun and vibrant? Zen? Are you sure? Is that how others would describe you, or is it what you wish to be? It’s just like your clothing. You know, how some people always look so perfectly styled? And it’s never the typical stuff that we all shop for. It’s always bohemian chic, or classic tailored or the like. Those people have already figured out what their story is, or at least, what they want you to believe it is. Filling your home with furniture, splashing paint on the walls, throwing down a rug…it can all be so scary. But if you take some time, and figure out who you are, what you really do like, and how you want to feel, narrowing things down can be a lot easier. Hiring a designer should be something you do once you’ve done that homework. That way, when they leave, your home actually feels like your home. Here’s some inspiration thanks to Maxwell Fabrics. The Neutral Zen-Type This palette is definitely great for someone who is laid back, and maybe wants to feel calm and natural at home. The trick is texture. Lots of shades of neutrals, with […]
